Marlow, Ala. — A 26-year-old Foley man drowned in Fish River on May 29, according to the Baldwin County Coroner’s Office.
Willie Sandes Ervin was one of three men swimming that afternoon near the old ferry landing when the men started cramping up, according to Deputy Coroner Rod Steade.
The men got halfway across the river and turned back, but Ervin wasn’t with them when they made it, Steade said, noting it is unknown if alcohol or drugs had anything to do with Ervin’s death.
“There were no signs of foul play,” Steade said on Tuesday.
Steade had high praise for Bon Secour Search & Rescue and Fish River-Marlow Volunteer Fire Department for their efforts in recovering Ervin’s body.
“You can’t praise them enough,” Steade said.
According to Steade, no swimming markers were out in the area where the three men were swimming.
