FOLEY, Ala. — Teams at Foley Middle School have selected the January Students of the Month. These students were selected based on their good character in the classroom and around campus. We are very proud to have them as our students. Eighth grade students of the month are Kayla Neely (chosen by the Big Dawgs), and Osman Perez (chosen by CSI Foley). Seventh grade students of the month are Kaytrielle Jones (chosen by the Superstars), and Calvin Muth (chosen by the PRIDE TEAM). Sixth grade students of the month are Emily Parham (chosen by BRATSS), and Logan Lane (chosen by the Masterminds). Congratulations to all students!
Mrs. Renee Scheetz and Mrs. Shea Hinson’s seventh grade science classes are preparing to begin their pig dissection project. This week the students are working on a computer-animated pre-dissection that will help the students know what to look for when they dissect their pigs. Students will get their pigs next week.
Ms. Barbara Riley’s seventh grade Literature classes are finishing the novel, “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” by Mildred Taylor. Caitlin explained that the book “is about the events of one crazy year. Cassie Logan, the main character goes through a lot. She is humiliated in public just because she is black. Her father is shot, and her family just might loose their land. Cassis is living in a time of depression, racism, and Night Riders.”
Mr. Brian Hood’s Daily Living Skills classes will be going to see “Mr. McGroium’s Magical X-mas” on Monday, Dec. 17. On Tuesday, Dec. 18 Mr. Hood’s students will be treated to a cook-out by the Foley Fire Department.
Ms. Rondall Rowell’s sixth grade science classes are currently researching biomes for a report and a diorama project. Ms. Rowell’s students are working in the library with the Lap-top Computers to do internet research for their projects as well as using trade books for research.
A new club on Foley Middle School Campus, the Foley Signing Lions (FSL), sponsored by Ms. Darlene Mose, went on a field trip to Mobile on Wednesday, December 5th. This trip gave the students an opportunity to interact with deaf students and use the new language they are learning. The club members thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and are looking forward to more educational field trips in the future!
Mr. Jarod Gillen’s eighth grade science classes have just finished a roller coaster project. The students built a roller coaster from K’NEX parts and discussed potential and kinetic energy as the car travels along the coaster.
Ms. Karen Gill, Ms. Sue Congleton, and Ms. Kim Frank, eighth grade English teachers, have announced that “Research is finally over!” The students’ typed research projects will be evaluated over the next few weeks for a major assessment English grade this quarter. Each teachers Literature classes are reading accelerated reader nonfiction books of their own choosing and within their individual reading levels for the final project of this semester.
Ms. Janice Osborne’s Enrichment classes created a Cartesian cartoon on rocket ships and each student signed a huge Christmas card wishing our troops a Merry Christmas. Ms. Osborne’s Math classes are working on long division and multiplying decimals. The students did a decimal conversion sheet and Ms. Osborne showed the students how decimals can change into fractions and then into percents. Ms. Osborne’s students learned songs that helped with decimals called, “Born to Divide”, “The Decimals Are Invisible”, and the floating decimal song on Scientific Notation. Ms. Osborne’s classes are planning to create another Cartesian cartoon on a reindeer next week.
Foley Middle School’s seventh and eighth graders will be taking their semester exams beginning Thursday, Dec. 13. On Thursday students will take exams in their first and third period classes. Friday, Dec. 14, students will take exams in their second and fifth period classes. Monday, Dec. 17, students will take exams in their and period classes. Tuesday, Dec. 18, students will take exams in their and period classes. Students will be dismissed at 3 p.m., on Dec. 19 for Christmas Holiday. Classes will resume for students on Jan. 7, 2008.
