Foley Middle School teacher resigns after public intoxication charge

FOLEY, Ala. — A nine-year employee of the Baldwin County Public School System submitted her resignation on Tuesday following her arrest last week for allegedly being intoxicated during school hours at Foley Middle School.

Barbara Riley, 55, was arrested by Foley police on Jan. 9 after a co-worker at FMS notified school administration concerning the English teacher’s condition.

“Such behavior is not tolerated and accepted,” Terry Wilhite, spokesman for Baldwin County Public Schools, said on Wednesday morning.

“She brought her letter of resignation in on Tuesday,” Wilhite said of the teacher who is known as “Barbara Riley” on school board records.

Riley, who came to Baldwin County from Illinois, has been identified in other media sources as “Barbara Riley-Grissom.”

Barbara Riley married Andrew L. Riley. The couple had been married only a short while when he drown in a fishing accident on the Fort Morgan peninsula in 2003, according to a former co-worker of Barbara Riley’s, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity.

“Until his death, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong. She just didn’t get over it,” the co-worker said.

She said Andrew Riley’s death was a “big part” of Barbara Riley’s problem with alcohol since 2003, calling the latter a “straight-arrow” before the death of her husband.

According to Wilhite, a substitute teacher was brought in to conduct Barbara Riley’s seventh grade English class on Monday.

Barbara Riley’s arrest came after school was dismissed on Friday, Wilhite said. She was placed on paid administrative leave at that time.

When she first came to FMS, Barbara Riley taught math before teaching English, her former co-worker said.
