FOLEY — Construction will soon begin on the next segment of Foley’s ongoing project to make the city safer and more appealing to bicyclists and pedestrians.

During their meeting last Monday, the Foley City Council approved a contract with Ammons & Blackmon Construction worth $1,437,340.50 for the work, which will include;

• A 10-foot wide asphalt path along east side of AL 59, from Section Avenue to Peachtree Avenue, approximately 5,340 feet.  This will connect to the Rose Trail, which spans from Section Avenue to Myrtle Avenue.

• An Eight-foot wide asphalt path along Berry Avenue, from AL 59 to Juniper Street, approximately 2,050 feet.

• A Combination concrete and asphalt path varying between 6 foot to 10 foot wide along Cater Lee Way and Section Avenue, from Ralph Schumacher Lane near the Foley Sportsplex to Poplar Street, approximately 9,630 feet.

• A 10-foot wide asphalt path along Poplar Street from US 98 to Berry Avenue, approximately 4,406 feet.

• An Eight-foot wide asphalt path along Pecan Street from Verbena Avenue to US 98, approximately 1,320 feet.

• An Eight-foot wide asphalt path along Pride Drive from Pine Street to AL 59, approximately 1,255 feet.

• An Asphalt path varying between 8-foot to 10-foot wide along Pine Street from County Road 20 to Pride Drive, approximately 3,957 feet.

• An Asphalt path varying between 8-foot to 10-foot wide along AL 59 from County Road 20 to Pride Drive, approximately 4,000 feet.

• An Eight-foot wide asphalt path along US 98 from Ralph Schumacher Lane to Oak Street, approximately 5,995 feet, and an 8-foot wide asphalt path along US 98 from Cypress Street to Pecan Street, approximately 4,510 feet.

Money for the construction comes from a $4.7 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, TIGER, grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2013, along with a 25 percent match — roughly $1.6 million — from the city.

That total amount — $6.3 million — is being put toward a citywide project called the Foley Transportation Regional Infrastructure Pedestrian System, or Foley TRIPS.

Additional projects tied to Foley TRIPS are likely to approved at future council meetings on an item-by-item basis.
