Foley moving forward with sidewalk project

FOLEY, Ala. - The Foley City Council approved a resolution at Monday's council meeting awarding the Cedar Street sidewalk project bid to E.J. Builders for the total amount of $263,456.20.

All council members voted in favor of the bid award except for Councilman Charles Ebert III, who abstained due to his business and the bid winner sharing an office building.

The sidewalks will begin on South Cedar Street near Foley Intermediate School, and it will continue around one mile to North Cedar Street about a block or two past Foley Middle School and Foley Elementary School, city engineer Butch Stokes said.

"It will come up Cedar (Street) and cross at least a couple times," Stokes said at the council work session, "and then it will (end) on the school side of the road."

Stokes said the project, which has been planned since 2009, should begin in the next few weeks.

"We were supposed to get funding last year," he said.

The city received a grant for $400,000 to help cover the cost of the project, and the city will pay 20 percent of the project cost with the other 80 percent coming from the grant, Stokes said.

"The master plan calls for us to connect all our parks and schools with sidewalks," Mayor John Koniar said, noting this project helps the city achieve that goal.

The next council meeting is scheduled for June 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Foley City Hall. The work session begins at 4 p.m.
