Foley police chief offers holiday safety tips

FOLEY, Ala. — “Crimes usually increase over the holidays from about October through the Christmas Holidays,” said Chief David Wilson with the Foley Police Department.

He gives these following safety tips to do your best to avoid becoming a victim.

If you are traveling over the holidays please do your best to make your home look “lived in” while you are away. Lock your doors and windows and consider using a professional alarm system for your home. You can also have a trusted friend check on your house each day and alternate leaving different interior lights on.

Have your friend or family member pick up the newspaper. If you have several newspapers piled up in your driveway you are asking to be burglarized. Burglars often look for these type indicators. Do not leave house keys under flower pots or welcome mats — burglars do check these places. If you leave the house, even to go to the store just around the corner, close your garage door. An open garage door that shows no vehicles inside is another red flag. Do not leave notes on your door saying when you will return.

Wilson said, “One of the best defenses against criminals is getting to know your neighbors. Get to know your neighbors and watch out for one another. In my career, I know of neighbors who have actually witnessed a burglary in progress but they weren’t for sure about it or they felt ‘silly’ about calling the police department. These homes were hit pretty hard and the neighbors then felt extremely bad for not calling”.

If you are out shopping, know your surroundings at all times. Park under well lit areas in parking lots at night and trust your instincts. Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle that may become a target of opportunity. Don’t leave your purse unattended, even if only for a second, in shopping carts. There are folks out there that specialize in purse thefts from shopping carts with lightning speed. It can be as quick as you stopping and grabbing a can of peas.

Always visually check the interior of your vehicle and behind the backseats before you get back into the car. Again, know your surroundings as you park and as you return to your vehicle. If you ever get worried or suspicious, trust that feeling and call us. Our officers are always ready to assist. “If in doubt- let the police check it out”.
