MOBILE, Ala. — Foley stopped Murphy quarterback K.J. Maye near midfield on fourth and seven with just under three minutes to play to preserve a 21-19 win over the Panthers on Thursday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
It was the second time the Lions turned Murphy over on downs in the second half. Murphy had just stopped Foley after a 13-play drive that ate up nearly six minutes in the fourth, and it looked like momentum had swung the Panthers' way.
"K.J. Maye is unbelievable, he is a phenomenal player," Foley coach Todd Watson said. "They've got him in an offense that exploits his talents. He presented a challenge to us all night long. Sometimes they won and sometimes we won, it just so happened that we won that one of fourth down."
Foley scored first on a 60-yard touchdown pass from first-year starter Maison Taylor to senior receiver Bob Pugh.
"We count on Bob, he is going to have some explosive plays for us this year," Watson said. "That's what a senior leader is supposed to do.
"I was very pleased with Maison, he held his poise well. He didn't look like a first time starter."
Joseph Brister scored twice for Foley on runs of one yard and five yards. Crishun Adams and Shawn Sanks had fumble recoveries for the Foley defense.
"I couldn't be any more pleased with the effort," Watson said. "It is hot and humid, been that way all week. To come out here and play this kind of a game where they really had to gut it out, that was great to see. I was real pleased with our kids."
The Lions (1-0) play at Robertsdale on Sept. 2.
