FOLEY, Ala.—The Lions outscored Fairhope 7-6 in overtime to take a 56-55 Class 6A, Area 3 win at Foley Tuesday. The visiting Pirates got the final shot off but missed at the buzzer.

“When we press the situation, we can be hard to handle,” said Foley head coach Shumbe Hunter. “We are still searching for consistency, though. But that takes time and we’re young.  I’m proud of how we came out in the second half and believed in ourselves. We just believed.”

The Pirates built an early double-digit lead of 25-14 by halftime. But Foley’s Ethan Krauss sparked a third-quarter rally with back-to-back-to-back unanswered 3-pointers to start a 30-14 third-period swing in the Lions’ favor. Foley led 44-39 to open the fourth.

Phillip Martin’s put back for Fairhope tied the score at 49-49 with 36 seconds left in regulation to force the OT.

Krauss opened the extra time with another trey right off the tip. The Pirates’ Kaleb Thomas and Tevin Brown countered while Mello Harris’ basket for the Lions made it 54-53  with two minutes left.

Both sides missed opportunities from the field and the free-throw line until Johnson hit both ends of a one-and-one for a 56-53 Foley lead. Thomas responded at the other end for two with 6.5 seconds to go.

Hunter and Fairhope’s head coach Robby Robertson then played chess with the clock, fouls and time outs. The all-or-nothing result was a Fairhope inbound at midcourt with 1.9 seconds to go. But the last shot was off the rim for the Lion win.

Johnson finished with 16 points, Krauss 14 and Harris nine to lead the Lions (8-14, 2-4). Brown led all with a game-high 18 points for Fairhope (11-11, 2-3), Martin added 12 points and Davis Watson seven. Martin electrified the gym with a run-away slam in the second period but the goal was disallowed on an offensive foul call.

The Pirates missed 8-of-10 free-throw opportunities while Foley made 11-of-23.
