FOLEY, Ala. — Nearly 100 men and women were thanked for the time they spent giving back to their community at a reception held by the City of Foley on April 18 at the Foley Civic Center. Persons who served on city committees and those who spent time volunteering for city departments were honored for their service.
Councilman Ralph Hellmich welcomed the group on behalf of the mayor and the city council. “Foley is very fortunate to have so many talented people who are willing to give their time to make Foley a better place,” said Hellmich. “We appreciate very much what you, the city volunteers, mean to Foley. Many times you are the face of Foley. You are a force multiplier for this city, allowing Foley to do things we could not do with the city workforce alone.”
Organizer Vickey Southern, city clerk, said the reception is an important way to let the group know how valuable they are to the city.
“These volunteers are a blessing to the city, and their service is greatly appreciated,” she said.
The city presented two awards for outstanding service. Carolyn Hollis of Hollis Orange Blossom Square was honored for her service as the chairperson of the Revitalization and Beautification Board, the chairperson of the Centennial Committee and for her work with the Foley Historical Commission.
Matt Maurin was honored for his work with the Santa Foundation. Maurin, who started the foundation in 2005, is instrumental in fundraising efforts to make sure that every needy child has a special Christmas. For 20 years, Maurin and his wife Rickey have personally seen to it that area children have an opportunity to talk with Santa during the Christmas season.
Former mayor Arthur Holk was recognized for serving 54 consecutive years on the Utilities Board of the City of Foley. Also, J. M. Lee was recognized for 34 years of service on the City of Foley Industrial Development Board, which promotes industry and trade by encouraging businesses to locate or expand in Foley.
Volunteers who serve on the following committees were recognized: the Board of Adjustments and Appeals, the Centennial Committee, the Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals, the Fire Code Board of Appeals, the Historical Commission, the Housing Authority, the Industrial Development Board, the Public Library Board, the Museum Archives Advisory Board, the Caboose Club, the Personnel Actions Committee, the Planning Commission, the Public Facilities Cooperative District, the Revitalization & Beautification Board, the Senior Citizen Advisory Board, the Utilities Board of the City of Foley and the Visitor Information Center.
