FOLEY, Alabama—The eighth grade and ninth-grade Foley Lions football teams won the 2012 Baldwin County championship in their divisions Monday at Ivan Jones Stadium over the Toros of Spanish Fort.

For the Lions it was their third middle-school title in a row and the second-straight for the Foley freshmen.

In the ninth-grade night cap the Toros scored in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead which they held until the final minute of the game.

With 60 seconds and 53 yards to go Foley quarterback Jarrett Powell connected with Bray Garrett on a deep corner pass for the 6-6 tie. Jonathan Langham then kicked the extra point for the 7-6 win.

Spanish Fort had driven 61 yards on their first possession but came up six-inches short of the goal line on a fourth-and-goal try from the Foley one.

But the Toros forced a fumble to get the ball back deep in Lion territory and scored on a second-and-goal run from the 16 by Tony Mitchell. The point-after-touchdown attempt was no good and both teams traded impressive drives and a few turnovers the rest of the night.

Spanish Fort made a last-chance drive into the Foley side to the 35 keyed by an 18-yard pass play from Ryan Brooks to Wil Cox, but Cox was sacked on fourth down for the final play.

In the middle-school game, Neither team scored in the first half. The Lions took the lead late in the third quarter when Tre Caples rumbled in for a nine-yard power sweep to cap a 51-yard drive begun off a Toro fumble at midfield. The PAT try for two was no good.

The Toros threatened with deep drives into the final minutes including a push to the Foley 10 but failed to finish. SFMS reached the 12 on another final-period play when Brooks connected with Miguel Restrepo over the middle for a big gain but Restrepo was shaken up on the play and did not return.

The Lions held the Toros, took over on downs and defended the lead for the 6-0 win.
