ROBERTSDALE – The Foley Lions jumped on Robertsdale early and often, scoring five times in the first half and cruising in the second on the way to a 35-7 win in Class 6A, Region 2 play.
Robertsdale (0-4, 0-3) started the game on a positive note when Chet Baker picked off a Darius Powell pass on Foley’s third play from scrimmage. The Bears gave the ball right back to Foley on the next play on a fumble and the Lions scored on a six-yard run by Marcus Washington four plays later. The Lions never looked back.
“I thought our offense came out on a roll,” Foley head coach Todd Watson said. “We had some key turnovers that gave us the ball back in good field position. We are excited about getting a region win.”
Foley got the ball right back after Jorge Santa Maria completed a successful onside kick after the score. Three plays later D’marsjae Casey scored on a 26-yard run.
After forcing a punt on Robertsdale’s next drive, Foley drove 55 yards in 11 plays for its next score. Marcus Washington scored on a one-yard run to put the Lions by three touchdowns.
Casey scored again on Foley’s next possession on a 54-yard run. He finished with six carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
“D’marsjae continues to play well each week,” Watson said. “He gets better and better every game. He is very elusive.”
Robertsdale drove 79 yards to the Foley one-yard-line on its next possession. The Bears had first-and-goal at the one. Caleb Sumrall rushed three times for a loss of one yard against Foley’s goal line defense. Michael Holmes intercepted a Sumrall pass on fourth down and returned it from the end zone to the 26. The Lions drove 76 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown following the goal line stand. Quarterback Darius Powell capped the drive with a 36-yard touchdown run.
Powell finished with 80 yards rushing and a touchdown and 97 passing yards. Washington had 54 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Dalton Cluck added a sack late in the game for Foley on defense.
In the third quarter, Robertsdale’s only score came after it marched 80 yards in 15 plays led by Sumrall, who rushed 10 times for 42 yards on the drive. He connected with Brandon Ellis for a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Sumrall finished with 25 rushes for 132 yards and 91 yards and a touchdown through the air.
Foley (2-2, 2-1) will host Mary G. Montgomery for homecoming next Friday.
Robertsdale will play at Baker.
