BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Foley didn’t put together many long sustained drives here Friday night in its final 6A Region 2 game against Baldwin County High School, but it didn’t matter.
The Lions, who are ranked No. 3 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 6A poll, scored quickly early in the game and went on to wallop the Tigers 42-6 to complete a perfect season against regional opponents, finishing 6-0 while also remaining unbeaten overall at 9-0.
Wide receiver Julio Jones made his usual share of big plays, catching four passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. He did have one lost fumble, and left the game in the third quarter after apparently reaggravating an ankle sprain that kept him out of last week’s 42-14 win over Robertsdale.
Running back LaVance Mitchell took up the slack offensively, rushing for 181 yards on just 15 carries and scoring three touchdowns. including a 41-yard run to the end zone to wrap up the scoring with 4:14 left in the game.
Smith also threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Mike Washington in the second quarter. Max Woerner scored the other Foley touchdown by recovering a blocked punt in the BCHS end zone for the Lion’s second TD.
Sophomore kicker Jorge Santa Maria kicked six extra points without a miss to round out the Foley scoring.
Baldwin County averted a shutout by driving 69 yards in nine plays late in the third quarter. Donald Taylor scored from 4 yards out, but the FHS special teams came up with another block when defensive back Robert Lester swatted Trace Zarr’s kick backwards.
Foley blocked another Zarr punt in the third quarter and took over at the BCHS 9 after the ball made it 5 yards past the line of scrimmage, but the Tigers put up a goal-line stand, stopping Smith on a fourth-down run.
The Lions set the tone early when standout wide receiver Julio Jones turned a screen pass reception from quarterback Devin Smith into a 47-yard gain to the BCHS 27-yard line. Mitchell followed with a 25-yard run around left end to the 2 and a pair of 1-yard runs to put Foley on the scoreboard.
Santa Maria made it 7-0 with the game just 1:12 old.
Woerner’s blocked-punt recovery with 5:53 left in the first quarter and Santa Maria’s extra point made it 14-0. On Foley’s bent possession, Smith’s 14-yard right-side slant-in pass to Jones on the last play of the first quarter capped off a 63-yard drive that took just six plays. and was aided by a pass-interference penalty against the Tigers, needed just two plays to cover 55 yards for its next touchdown.
The second quarter was scoreless, then the Lions, after stopping BCHS on the Tigers’ opening possession, scored again on Smith’s long pass to Washington. The Lions wideout out-jumped a BCHS defender in the right side of the end zone to score with 9:26 showing after Mitchell knocked off a 16-yard run around right end.
After stalling a BCHS drive after the Tigers made one first down, Foley went 74 yards in six plays to make it 35-0 when Mitchell scored on a 14-yard option play with 3:45 left in the third quarter.
BCHS answered with its lone scoring drive. The big play in it was a 29-yard pass from quarterback Luther Sanders to split end T.C. McWilliams.
Mitchell’s 41-yard TD jaunt finished off a six-play, 94-yard drive after the Tigers had another drive stopped. Mitchell carried four times for 73 yards.
Smith completed nine of 17 passes for 187 yards and was intercepted once. Sanders was 11-for-28 for 175 yards for the Tigers, who were penalized 12 times for 80 yards. Foley suffered just two walk-offs from the officials for 9 yards.
McWilliams caught six passes for 114 yards, all in the second half. Charleston Gandy had 90 yards rushing on 16 carries. BCHS had 161 yards rushing.
The 9-0 Lions close out regular-season play Friday night by hosting 5A St. Paul’s The Tigers, now 4-4, and a final 3-3 in Region 2 play, take on another unbeaten 6A team, McGill-Toolen, Thursday night in Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Baldwin County managed to keep a state-playoff berth when Fairhope defeated Satsuma.
