Foley's Arbor Day set for Saturday

Posted

Arbor Day in Foley is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Park.

The city has a revitalization and beautification advisory board, and they advise the mayor and council on things that would beautify the city. Part of its job is putting together Arbor Day, Jessica Nelson, the city’s administrative assistant, said.

This is the 30th annual Arbor Day celebrated in Foley, and free seedlings, which are baby trees, will be available to residents.

“They look like twigs kind of,” Nelson said. “They’re usually about 2-to-3 feet long. We’ll have hundreds available.”

The types of seedlings available at the event include red cedar, plum, nuttall oak, crepe myrtle, bald cypress, live oak, compton oak and mayhaw.

“We are a Tree City, USA. Each year we put together an application to make sure we are meeting the qualifications laid out by the Arbor Day foundation, which is a national program,” Nelson said.

The Baldwin County Master Gardeners Association will be at the event to answer questions about the available seedlings, and Boy Scout Troop 77 will assist in distributing the seedlings to residents.

Mayor John Koniar will also be presented a Tree City, USA flag.
