FOLEY, Ala. — It looks like construction of the Foley Centennial Plaza will not be complete by this weekend’s Christmas activities, which include tonight’s Christmas in the Park and Saturday’s Christmas Parade and Let it Snow.
Foley city leaders discussed that prospect during Monday’s Foley City Council work session.
“I’m a little bit disappointed,” said City Administrator Mike Thompson.
He explained that delivery of a portion of the tower has caused the delay.
“The problems we have are with the white capstones,” Thompson said. “They were supposed to be in by late August.”
However, those capstones were just delivered at the end of November — a month after the plaza was expected to be completed.
That delay put the landscaping of the area surrounding the plaza behind a month with the City Council approving $15,000 for landscaping during Monday’s regular meeting.
Foley Centennial Plaza is designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Foley’s incorporation date of January 8, 1915.
The centerpiece structure houses a 52-foot musical clock tower, which can provide power for a keyboard. Concerts can be held on the adjoining Plaza stage. A brick walkway — containing purchased markers honoring residents — is also a feature of the total Plaza project.
The clock portion of the tower was installed in October.
Construction on the project began in May as 50 people attended a ground-breaking ceremony. Plans for the project began five years ago, with the endeavor fueled by volunteer efforts and fundraising.
Although the construction is not yet finished, Thompson anticipates attendees of this weekend’s Christmas in the Park and Let it Snow will still enjoy the new feature.
“We’re hoping we’re going to be able to play music on the carola,” he said.
Thompson added that plans are still under way to include the plaza in the city’s centennial celebration on Jan. 8.
