Forensic pathologist: Angel Downs death should have been ruled a suicide from the 'get-go'

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Testimony continues this morning with cross examination of a Mobile psychiatrist who testified Friday that Angel Downs’ medical records indicate she had suicidal tendencies and probably took her own life May 9.

Dr. Charles Rich, a retired Mobile psychiatrist said Downs showed signs of depression and substance abuse — key factors in 80 percent of suicides.

In other testimony Thursday, Dr. James Lauridson, a forensic pathologist and former chief medical examiner for the state Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery, pointed to suicide as the cause of Downs’ death, based on his review of crime scene and autopsy photos, medical records and written law enforcement accounts.

“This was a suicide,” Lauridson told jurors. “It should have been called that from the get-go.”

Former Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine is charged with murder in the shooting death of Downs in the driveway of her Gulf Shores condominium.
