Fort Mims to honor War of 1812

TENSAW, Ala. — War is about to be declared in north Baldwin County. Well, the memory of it, as Fort Mims Historic Site in Tensaw presents the Commemoration of the War of 1812 next weekend.

The event is set for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 17-18. Admission is $5 at the gate, with proceeds benefitting Fort Mims.

According to Claudia Campbell of the Fort Mims Restoration Association, the event will include an educational experience.

“We have speakers lined up,” she said in a telephone interview.

Those speakers will discuss such topics as the War of 1812, its effect on the area and nearby installation Fort Montgomery.

Additional activities will include a Bashi Creek ambush re-enactment and dusk tactical artillery maneuvers.

Plus, the weekend will also feature performances of early 19th century period music.

“There’s going to be something for everybody,” Campbell said.

This is not the first commemorative weekend at Fort Mims. Each year in August, the site re-enacts the Battle of Fort Mims. That event is one that attracts numerous visitors.

“Last August, we had between 1,100 and 1,200,” Campbell said.

She’s expecting next weekend’s 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 to also draw tourists.

“I am receiving calls every day about things that are going on,” Campbell said, “today from Mississippi, Mobile and Birmingham.”
