ORANGE BEACH, AL - A catamaran power boat with twin engines coming from the east into Perdido Pass ran aground unto the southeast jetties on Thursday evening, Orange Beach fire officials said.
"The boat is fully out of the water on the rocks and we had to remove them by watercraft," Battalion Chief Justin Pearce of Orange Beach Fire and Rescue said.
Four of the six passengers were transported to area hospitals, one via LifeFlight. Two others refused transports. All of the passengers were adults, Pearce said. The vessel is a 28-foot World Cat center, a release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said.
Randy Black, owner and operator, along with passengers, Delbert Cagle, John Crase and Thomas Armstrong were transported to local hospitals for various injuries.
Two other passengers, Josh Crase, and Kevin Burke were not transported. No PFD’s were in use at the time of the crash. Preliminary investigation indicates alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
The ALEA report didn’t indicate which of the passengers were taken out by helicopter.
"They were flown out because they had significant injuries," Pearce said. "There were injuries substantial enough to warrant that.”
Marine 5, Water Resuce 1, Water Rescue 2 and Marine 1 responded to the call which first came in at 8:37, officials said.
Orange Beach officials had a busy day on June 23 which also included the death of a snorkeler in the area of the Romar Beach Access. A 49-year-old was snorkeling in the area when he was observed not moving by other swimmers. Officials believe he had a medical issue which caused his death.
This is the third boating accident in Baldwin County in less than a week, the other two involving fatalities.
A vessel crash at 9:15 p.m. along the Intracoastal Waterway, Saturday, June 18, claimed two lives and injured three people.
Vessel operator Robert Lance Criswell, 32, of Jackson, and a passenger, Samuel Jacob Hawk, 28, of Thomasville, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Three other passengers on board the boat were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The crash occurred when the 2007 Sea Hunt 220 they were aboard struck a pier entering Oyster Bay.
A 43-Year-old Foley man was killed in an accident on Fish River the evening of June 21.
Tom Timothy Hall, 43, of Foley, was killed when he and two other passengers were thrown from a 14-foot Cape Horn at around 7:25 p.m. on June 21 on the Fish River just south of the Honey Road boat ramp, according to a release issued Wednesday by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Officials with the Orange Beach Dive Team said their crew located and recovered Hall's body. Melvin Shepard, the city's beach safety director and a member of the dive team, said Hall had purchased the boat recently and was taking it out for a test drive when the incident occurred.
According to reports, Hall’s body was recovered just after midnight.
