Fourth of July events planned

DAPHNE, Ala. — An “explosive” event will be held at dark on Friday at Trione Sports Complex on Whispering Pines Road. The city will provide a free, public fireworks show in a family-friendly atmosphere, organizers said.

The event will last about 30 minutes; everyone should bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, Jane Robbins, Mayor Fred Small’s assistant, said.

People can also bring snacks and drinks, she said.

“It’s a family environment — no alcohol,” she said. “We believe this is a way to bring the community together and allows everyone to participate.”

The fireworks show began 10 years ago at the Lake Forest Yacht Club and moved to the sports complex after five years.

Last year, the event drew nearly 1,500 people to watch the display on the warm, summer night.

“It is a very popular event and well attended,” Robbins said.

The public should attend because it’s free, but also because it’s a “great opportunity to watch the fireworks with your family and friends in a family atmosphere,” she said.

The show can be seen from Daphne East Elementary and Daphne Middle School; people also may watch the display from those areas, she said.

Spanish Fort will have no Independence Day events because the funding was not included in the city’s budget and because they didn’t want to compete with other cities, according to city officials.

A cook-out benefiting the American Cancer Society will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in Fairhope. Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and drinks will be available for a donation to the American Cancer Society. The event will be held at the bluff at the Fairhope Pier.

Fairhope will host a performance of the Baldwin Pops at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the Henry George Park bluff, along with fireworks at the Fairhope Pier.
