Free Them 5K to debut

FOLEY, Ala. — Hope Haven Free Them 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run is set for this weekend at Foley First Baptist Church.

Participants hit the road at 8 a.m. Saturday in front of the church, which is located at 219 N. Alston St. in Foley.

Preregistration is $20 for 5K Run/Walk, $15 for 10 and under and $15 for 1-mile fun run.

Same day registration for 5K Run/Walk is $25. Awards will be given, and concessions will be served to participants.

Proceeds benefit Hope Haven, which works to eliminate modern slavery.

According to Hope Haven Marketing and Public Relations Director Lee Krueger, Hope Haven is a ministry conceived by Donna Armstrong a few years ago.

“Sue and I had been on mission trips together,” she said, explaining that Armstrong began to voice a desire to seek mission opportunities in Baldwin County.

“Then we went through a human-trafficking seminar together,” Krueger said.

That seminar led Armstrong to the idea of ministering to victims of human trafficking.

“This became Donna’s vision,” Krueger said.

That vision led to the opening of Hope Haven two years ago. Since then, the facility serves to help victims transition out of that lifestyle.

“We meet their immediate needs,” Krueger said.

That includes providing shelter, rest, clothing and food, as well as faith-based guidance, counseling and Bible study.

“We prepare them to transfer to a long-term facility,” Krueger said.

That mission is carried out on a volunteer basis.

“We have a very small core group of volunteers,” Krueger said.

Hope Haven is a 501C-3 nonprofit organization. Thus, funding is provided by donations and benefits.

“Our last event was at Foley First Baptist Church last year,” Krueger said.

While that consisted of Shane and Carmen Tucker performing “An Evening with Elvis,” this upcoming benefit will be an entirely different event.

“This is our first 5K,” Krueger said.

Preregistration has been ongoing for several weeks. Already it has attracted a number of participants.

“So far, we’ve got at least 100 runners signed up,” Krueger said. “That’s awesome for us this year.”

Preregistration continues this week, and onsite registration begins at 6 a.m. Saturday.
