Friday fun returns to Foley

Posted

FOLEY, Ala. — Fridays in Foley are about to be a little more flavorful and entertaining, as both Foley Farmers Market and Music and a Movie in the Park return to Heritage Park this week.

According to Linda Hula of Foley Visitors Center, Foley Farmers market will be held 3-6 p.m. each Friday, beginning this week, at the park, which is located at the intersection of State Road 59 and U.S. Highway 98.

Admission is free. However local and regional farmers will sell produce and food products, such as fruit, vegetables, honey, low-sugar jams and jellies, wine, seafood, farm-fresh eggs, baked goods, plants and home-made ice cream.

Hula explained that the event, which started in 2009, tends to draw a crowd.

“Last year, we had at least 150-200 people each week,” she said.

One reason is that the market allows attendees to watch what they eat.

“People are very health conscious now,” Hula said.

Once attendees have made their purchases, they might want to stay for Music and a Movie in the Park, which begins at 6 p.m. with live entertainment and is followed by a free movie shown on an inflatable outdoor screen at sunset.

According to Hula, the films offer something for all ages.

“They’re all family friendly,” she said.

Plus, the entertainment and movies will go hand in hand.

“It’s a fun time,” Hula said.

The weekly event will kick off Friday with Gulf Coast Zoo and South Baldwin Community Children’s Theatre, followed by the film, “The Zoo Keeper.”

Next week will hold an aquatic theme, with the movie, “A Dolphin Tale,” which will be preceded by The Foley Middle School Choir and Baldwin Pops.

“That’s a real treat,” Hula said.

On June 1, Cool Changes will perform in advance of “Secretariat.” The following Friday will hold a Zumba demonstration and performance by Dana Faires, followed by the film, “Happy Feet 2.”

On June 22, the movie “Forever Young” will be preceded by performances by the Alabama Baton Corps and the 151st U.S. Army Band.

“I’m really excited about that,” Hula said.

Music and a Movie in the Park will conclude on June 29, with a performance by Billy Pelletier, party contests and water sprinklers, all in advance of the movie, “Soul Surfer.”
