FSCC gets two wins and a tie on road trip to pro training fields

BAY MINETTE, Ala. They did exactly make it a clean sweep, but the Faulkner State Sun Chiefs returned from their annual trip to the major league spring training area of south central Florida with two wins and a tie last week.

Faulkner beat one team of Philadelphia Phillies Class A minor league players 3-1 in a Monday game in Clearwater, Fla., then settled for a 2-2 tie the next day against another group of Phillies farm hands before downing Eckerd College’s junior varsity team 9-4 in 10 innings.

The Sun Chiefs rallied from a run down in the Monday game with two runs in the seventh inning, then scored once more ion the eighth on Clint Brown’s RBI double. Cody Barber singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh after FSCC tied the score on an error.

Tim Daw, Chris Clements, Zac Cates, Michael Tedesco, Chris Cooper and Chad Watson also singled against the young professional pitchers.

Reliever Jason Gavel was the winning pitcher and Johnny Ladneir earned a save.

Tuesday against the minor-leaguers, Faulkner scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take the lead each time. Barber led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a wild pitch, Watson also scored via a wild pitch in the sixth after reaching first on an error and taking third on Chris Clements’ base hit.

Clements also singled in the second and Barber had a base hit in the seventh.

Thëe Phllies scored single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

In the extra-inning win over Eckerd, Clements’ single drove in Watson, who had tripled, with the go-ahead run in the 10th. Barber increased the lead with a two-run single and Cates doubled him home.

Two unearned runs in the second gave FSCC the early lead and they edded two more, one earned, in the third for a 4-0 lead. Eckerd got a run back in the sixth and staged a three-run rally in the ninth to send the fame into extra innings.

Cates also had an RBI double and Daw a run-scoring ground out in the second. Watson scored on a wild pitch after singling, then stealing second and third in the third, and Barber had an RBI single later in the inning.

Watson also singled in the seventh. Tommy Lott had two hits, Daw doubled, and Roy and Tailor Holley singled.

Ladnier was the winner in relief after entering the fame in the ninth inning.
