This Saturday, Oct.20, automotive enthusiasts will have a grand sight to behold. With more than 120 cars, trucks, and motorcycles, ranging from the 1920s to the modern day, beautifully displayed for the public to enjoy. The grounds of Faith Fellowship Church will be adorned with hundreds of booths, exihibitions and activities for all ages beginning at 10 a.m. for the Fun in the Son Car Show.
This annual event has quickly become the local area’s largest car show, and this year will feature a number of custom built Pro-Mod cars which can reach speeds of 195 m.p.h. in less than 4 seconds. These cars are just a fraction of the exciting exhibits that will be there.
It is a sponsored event, drawing autophiles from abroad, and handmade full size trophies will be presented to contest winners. “Without our sponsors, we wouldn’t have these incredible trophies. Without the trophies, we couldn’t draw the competition, and without the competition we couldn’t bring out the spectators to enjoy the cars and buy the merchandise. We are all truly grateful for our sponsors and for all the support we have recieved from the community. Without their support, none of this would have been possible.”, said Pastor Dave Kelso.
Not only will the cars be on display, but some will also be competing in a burnout competition at the church’s on-site burnout pit. Contestants will be judged in dozens of catagories, ensuring everyone competing goes home with something. In addition, there will be a Police Canine Exhibition featuring Officer John Hamrick of the Fairhope Police Department and his police dog Mojo starting at noon.
Anybody interested in competing is encouraged to sign-up from 8 to 10 a.m. and there will be free coffee and rolls until 9 a.m. The judging of the show will begin at 9 a.m. and last until around 11:30 or until judging is complete.
There will be concessions, a bake sale, a general store and a silent auction, as well as other exhibits opening around 10 a.m. inside the newest (air-conditioned) addition to the church grounds. This new facility will also house a big-screen Doo-Wop Media Review featuring musical artists from the 1950s and T-shirts and memorabelia for the nostalgic at heart.
The burnout competition is a half-hour event and will start at 1:15 p.m. near the show car area. The awards ceremonies start at 3 p.m., and prizes will be decided in catagories ranging from the “Hard Luck Award” for the participant whose had the roughest time, to the “Show Stopper Award” which will be comemorated with a 7 1/ 2 foot tall trophy. Other catagories include, but are not limited to, youngest driver, outstanding achievment, best of decade, best in class and farthest distance driven.
The festivities will conclude around 5 p.m. All money collected from the event will be used by the church to fund its new building project and keep the debt incurred during construction to a minimum.
