FAIRHOPE, Ala. — A poker run and concert will be held Saturday, June 14 to benefit the Fairhope Veterans Memorial. Sponsored by the American Legion Post 199, Fairhope Elks Lodge 1879 and Emblem Club 241, the event is a great way to celebrate Flag Day.
The festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with a flag ceremony on the bluff at the American Legion, led by the Fairhope Elks Lodge and local Boy and Girl Scouts.
Registration for the poker run also begins at 9 a.m. Participation costs $25 that day and includes all the day’s activities and food served at the Legion. Pre-registration is $20 per participant.
A charter bus will be available for those who do not care to traverse the course on a motorcycle. Bus riders must sign up and prepay $20 per rider to reserve a seat by contacting the American Legion, 928-9132, or the Fairhope Elks Lodge, 928-9120.
Bikes, charter buses and personal vehicles will depart from the Fairhope American Legion at 10 a.m. (cycles must be on the road by 11), stopping at a minimum of five major points of interest in the county to receive a poker hand. There will be north loop as far up as Cliff’s River Pub (Cliff’s Landing) and a south loop as far as the Flora Bama. Maps will be provided.
Then, it’s back to the Legion for poker hands, prizes, raffles, food and music. Top prizes will include a weekend for two at the Imperial Palace in Biloxi, Miss. and a weekend for two at 29 Dreams near Birmingham, Ala.
Children’s activities are also being planned.
The public is invited to attend the music concert at the Legion Beach Stage for a minimum donation of $5. RuffWater Band will play from 4-6 p.m., followed by John Reno and the Half-Fast Creekers from 6-9.
The poker hands will be revealed during the band break between 6 and 6:30.
Volunteers and other organizations interested in this event should contact Rhonda Stacey at 928-1528. The Fairhope American Legion is located at 700 S. Mobile St.
All proceeds go to the Fairhope Veterans Memorial fund, to pay for this memorial, titled “Tears of Sorrow — Tears of Joy,” which will be placed on the bluff overlooking the Fairhope Municipal Pier.
The memorial consists of two life-sized, bronze sculptures honoring American military service veterans and their families.
