Third through sixth grade Project Jubilee students at Magnolia School have been experiencing medieval times. They have taken field trips, had banquets, and held a catapult tournament. One of the activities was the jousting fieldtrip. The class went to Summerdale School and watched Sir Rob and Sir Bob joust. The knights were from the show Full Metal Jousting on the History Channel. Another trip they went on was to the Orange Beach Art Center. They played Medieval games, such as checkers, Bowls (an early form of bowling), and Pall Mall, which is like croquet. Students made stained glass sun catchers and learned about blowing glass. In the art gallery, they found examples of Middle Ages art, such as mosaics. Students used their creativity and research skills to build scaled Medieval catapults. Then they competed for points in creativity, authenticity, and distance. Abby Gaar won first place in the catapult competition. Project Jubilee students had a medieval banquet. They used their decision making matrix to decide who was best qualified to be a queen and a king for the banquet. The 6th grade king was Owen Cole and the 6th grade queen was Cierra Ryan. The 4th grade king was Robert Creech and the 3rd grade queen was Micah Watson. Then the others chose a piece of paper from a hat to determine their rank in the feudal system. The people had to be seated from most important to least important. For example the king and queen sat at the head table and the surfs were last. Parents of Project Jubilee students cooked traditional Medieval food, helped set up, served, and cleaned at the banquet. Project Jubilee students learned that not all kings and queens were generous during the medieval times and that people were placed in unfair ranks. Venison pie, roast beef, spiced pears, and gingerbread were among their favorite foods. Through these many, varied medieval experiences, Project Jubilee students felt they had a glimpse of what it might be like to live in Medieval times.
