GAME OF THE WEEK: Toros to host Dolphins in 5A, Region 1 opener

This week’s games mark the opening of region play for Baldwin County football teams.

The Gulf Shores Dolphins (1-0) will be the first visitors to Spanish Fort’s new stadium when the Toros (1-0) host them on Friday.

“You know it will be very emotional for them,” Gulf Shores head coach Mark Freeman said. “They played basically on the road for three years, and now they have their own place to play. We just have to make sure our guys keep things on an even keel for 48 minutes. We have to get off the bus ready to play.”

Toro coach Bryant Vincent said his team has to be prepared for anything against a Gulf Shores team with a new coach.

"I expect the unexpected from Gulf Shores this week," Vincent said. "We must be prepared for everything. They will hold nothing back, period. Our entire football team must play very well in all phases to have a chance to win. The atmosphere here at SF Friday will be electric."

Spanish Fort’s defense held J.O. Johnson to just over 100 yards of offense and forced five turnovers in a 30-0 win on Friday.

“We’ve got to execute very well on offense this week,” Freeman said. “Defense is their strong point. We’ve got to be able to move the ball and keep them off balance. They are sound. I wish I could say they have a weakness, but there isn’t one. They are a very, very well coached team.”

Spanish Fort will have to contend with Gulf Shores senior quarterback Logan Paul, who had two passing touchdowns and a rushing score against Robertsdale on Friday.

Spanish Fort senior quarterback Patrick McGavin had one passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown against J.O. Johnson. Wide receiver Keller Davis, who had a touchdown on Friday, is a transfer from Gulf Shores.

In 6A, Region 2 play Foley (0-1) visits Baldwin County (1-0), Fairhope (1-0) hosts McGill-Toolen (0-1) and Satsuma visits Robertsdale (0-1).

In 3A, Region 1 Calhoun visits Bayside Academy (0-1).
