ROBERTSDALE – In his first night back from being sidelined for two weeks with a hamstring injury, Charleston Gandy had a big night for the Baldwin County High School tigers against Robertsdale High Schoolon Friday.

Gandy led the Tigers to the 28-21 victory over the Golden Bears with 171 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The opening two drives of the game saw defensive power on both sides of the field as neither team was able to come up with much yardage.

Baldwin County’s C.J. Stevens had a 29-yard return on Robertsdale’s punt after its first possession. The Tiger running backs turned up the heat on the Bears as Andrew King started with an 11-yard rush followed by Gandy with a 22-yard carry. Namon Scott took the third snap for 11 yards setting up first and goal at Robertsdale's six. Gandy scored the six yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 5:07 left in the first quarter.

The second posession for RHS was much the same as the first as Baldwin County’s Brandon Savage sacked the Bear quarterback Caleb Sumrall for his second sack of the night.

The Tigers were able to get the ball back and the "Triple Threat" of King, Scott, and Gandy came up big once again for BCHS.

King carried the ball three times for 49 yards, Gandy went 17 yards on three carries and Scott added five yards before King scored a 13-yard touchdown to give the Tigers the 14-0 lead with only 4.3 seconds left in the first quarter.

The second quarter of the game was all Robertsdale as Larry Forney Jr. drove in a one-yard touchdown to bring the Bears within seven with 8:29 left in the first half.

After a short gain by BCHS, the Golden Bears recovered a fumble on their own 33. On first down at the 33, Samuel Tolbert moved the ball four yards for second and six. Then Sumrall connected with Jarrod Mack for a 13-yard gain. Tolbert then carried the ball three more times for 23 yards before Forney drove two more yards. On second down Brandon Ellis then caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Sumrall to tie the game at 14-14 with 3:14 left in the first half.

Demetrius Coley returned the ensuing kickoff 15 yards for the Tigers. BCHS quarterback Jordan Ebert called his own number as he took five yards on a quarterback keeper. King then had another big run as he marched the ball down the field for another nine yards and Gandy aided with six yards on the next play. As the clock was ticking away Ebert decided to toss the ball. The first pass was incomplete but Ebert was able to connect to Jarett Denton in two passes totaling 25 yards before the buzzer sounded.

The teams were tied at 14 at the half.

The opening drive of the second half saw Sumrall connect with Ellis for 13 yards, then keep the ball on the next two plays for a total of nine yards. He connected with Ellis for another seven yards on the next play. Baldwin County's defense then put the pressure on Sumrall when Marquel Austin and Savage sacked him for a five yard loss.

Sumrall was able to brush off the sack as he connected with Tolbert for an 11-yard gain, placing the Bears third down and four to go. Sumrall's next two passes were incomplete and BCHS got the ball back on downs at its own 27. Gandy and King marched down field in 8 plays gaining 68 yards to set Gandy up for the five-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 21-14 lead with 4:15 left in the third.

Baldwin County's defense held the Bears to three and out with another sack by Savage setting up Austin with a 34-yard punt return.

The first play Baldwin County’s next drive saw Scott take a seven-yard run, then Robertsdale was pentalized for a pass interference giving the Tigers the first-and-goal at the 10. Scott then drove four yards to set up another six-yard touchdown run for Gandy bringing the score 28-14 with 1:15 left in the third.

Tolbert made a seven-yard kick off return to place the Bears on their own 18 yard line to set up their next drive.

On the first two plays of the drive Tolbert ran for 13 yards combined and then Jarrod Mack was stopped in the back field for a two-yard loss. Tolbert then had a seven-yard catch and a three-yard run to give the Bears a first down. On the next play Sumrall looked for a pass and couldn't find anyone open decided to keep the ball for an 11 yard run. Sumrall connected an 24-yard pass to Ellis.

Then, with pressure from the Tigers, Sumrall kept the ball for a one-yard gain before he handed the ball to Tolbert for three yards to set up first and goal at the 6. Sumrall’s first pass was incomplete in the endzone to set up second and goal. Tolbert then took the handoff and was tackled in the backfield for a three yard loss setting up third and goal at the 9. Sumrall hit Matthew Maddox in the right corner of the endzone for a nine-yard score to knock on BCHS' door 28-21 with 6:51 left in the game.

The defenses were too strong on both sides of the ball and held both teams scoreless for the remainder of the game giving the Tigers their third win of the season.

It also marked the Tigers first region win of the season. Robertsdale fell to 0-6 overall.

The Tigers (4-2) will travel to Daphne Friday night at 7 p.m. The Golden Bears will travel to Fairhope and face the unbeaten Pirates.
