Garbage rates to fall in Spanish Fort

SPANISH FORT—At the last city council meeting, Spanish Fort officials unanimously approved an ordinance granting Advanced Disposal Services the city’s contract for garbage pick-up, saving citizens nearly $6 a month.

Advanced Disposal was the low bidder for the garbage pick-up contract, beating out about four other bidders, according to Mayor Joseph Bonner. Advanced Disposal was the winner of the previous contract as well and has been serving the city for the past three years.

The good news for citizens is that Advanced had to lower its prices in order to win the contract. Residents have been paying $20.14 a month for their garbage services. Now they will be paying $14.20 a month, a drop of nearly six dollars. With recycling the new price will be $19.20 a month, down from $25.12 a month previously.

The city’s new cost is cheaper than the county’s price for garbage pick-up. The county price is $18.70 a month with a container or $14.95 a month without a container.

“I am very happy about the new prices,” said Bonner. “Anytime we can pass along savings to our citizens I am happy about it.”
