Jane Gulley Garner, 58, a native of Covington, Tenn., and a longtime resident of Daphne, died peacefully Thursday, July 17, 2008 after a period of declining health. She was at home surrounded by her loved ones.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. With her passing, the community lost an extraordinary treasure.

She was a graduate of the University of Memphis. She began teaching at Murphy High School in 1973. She deeply touched the lives of thousands of students. She set the standard for excellence in education for three decades. She retired in 2006. All will miss her warmth, generosity, loving nature, and beautiful laugh.

She was a member of Spanish Fort United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Gulley of Covington, Tenn.

Survivors include her most loving and devoted husband of 36 years, Richard Garner of Daphne; son, John Richard (Jessica) Garner of Opelika; daughter, Melissa (Woody) Woodgate of Juneau, Alaska; three precious grandchildren: Clay, Ambrosia, and Desi Woodgate of Juneau, Alaska; her mother, Mary Ann Gulley of Covington, Tenn.; brother, John Gulley of Little Rock, Ark.; nephew, John Buxton Gulley of Hattiesburg, Miss.; other relatives and special friends.

The family thanks God for the special angels that He sent to watch over her: the Rev. Reverend Debora Bishop, Dr. Daniel Cameron, the staff of Springhill Hospice, and her special caregivers, Tracie Patterson and Jasmine Killiebrew.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20 at Jubilee Memorial Gardens, Daphne, with the Rev. Debora Bishop officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Gulley, John Buxton Gulley, John Richard Garner, and Woody Woodgate.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, 6530 Spanish Fort Blvd. Suite D, Spanish Fort, AL 36527.
