Gaylord Miller Saltzgaber, 90, of South Bend, Ind., died Friday, March 16, 2012 in South Bend. A memorial service for family and friends will be at a later date. Gaylord, or “Salty” as he came to be known, was born in Wyatt, Ind. on Oct. 16, 1921 to Verlin and Erma (Lambert) Saltzgaber. In retirement, Gaylord and Carol became full time RVers. In their later years, their time was split between Rustic Potawatomie Campground near Coldwater, Mich., and Gulf Breeze RV Park in Gulf Shores, where they volunteered as pastors of the campground’s ecumenical church. Gaylord was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, the former Carol Parcell; grandson, Paul Saltzgaber. His brother, Albin, and sisters Marie Bennett and Maxine Tharpe also preceded him in death. He is survived by his three children, Mark Saltzgaber (Connie), Amy Otto (Rich) and Wendy Grice (Garry); three grandchildren, Carolyn Barber, Marjorie Weber and Alex Otto, and two great-grandchildren, Elijah-Paul Barber and Coral Barber. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts to the Center for Hospice or to the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County for the Paul Saltzgaber Memorial Fund for Reading, Writing and the Arts.
