German Sausage Festival tomorrow

ELBERTA, Ala. — South Baldwin residents should beef up for the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department’s German Sausage Festival this weekend.

According to press information, the event is slated for 8 a.m.-6 p.m. tomorrow at Elberta Town Park.

While admission is free, various activities and concessions will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefitting the fire department and additional Elberta town projects.

“The sausage festival is a town fundraiser, spearheaded by Elberta’s Volunteer Fire Department in 1978,” the department’s website states.

Since that time, the event draws approximately 30,000 attendees.

“We usually sell about 7,000 pounds of German sausage each festival,” the website states.

Over the years, the popularity of the event has expanded its occurrence to each spring and autumn.

“Due to its huge success, the festival is now held twice a year on the last Saturday of March and October,” the website states.

As the name indicates, tomorrow’s day-long festival will carry a German theme, with Polka music, the Bellview Stumpfiddle Band with North End Stompers and such delicacies as goulash, German-style filled cabagge and, of course, German sausage and sauerkraut.

Additional attractions include 200 arts-and-crafts booths, a bake sale, carnival rides, cloggers, a country-music band and a petting zoo. Plus, extra food options include red beans and rice, hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, ice cream, popcorn, peanuts, potato salad, coffee, soft drinks and additional beverages.

“Join us at the German Sausage Festival for Elberta’s famous German sausage and sauerkraut,” the website states, “plus continuous entertainment for adults and children.”

Efforts to reach the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department for comment by press time were unsuccessful.
