PENSACOLA, Fla. — Let your imagination soar at the first “Go Fly Zone” event on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., at the National Naval Aviation Museum aboard NAS Pensacola. The free event will feature activities throughout the day such as radio-controlled model aircraft demonstrations, picture opportunities in a real Blue Angels cockpit and a chance to learn the physics of flying from bird experts Dorothy Kaufman and Linda Hartmann.

The day’s main event will feature Ken Blackburn, Guinness World Record Holder for time aloft for a paper airplane. Blackburn will demonstrate his record-breaking plane design and instruct kids on how to copy his signature, sky-soaring techniques.

A friendly paper airplane competition will follow with prizes for the first place finishers.

The complete schedule of events is as follows:

•Radio-controlled Model Aircraft Demonstrations. 8:30–10 a.m., Flight Line behind Museum.

Northwest Florida Modelers Inc. will perform a model aircraft air show with models as large as 50 percent of their original size and with wingspans ranging from 5 to 10 feet.

Model aircraft such as a P-51, P-47, F-18, T-6, Corsair and an Extra will dazzle flight fans. Bleachers will be available for seating.

Several WWII vintage aircraft and other planes also will be on display for visitors to view.

•Picture Perfect with Blue Angel cockpit. 11 a.m.–1 p.m., Atrium.

Children are invited to have their photo taken in a real Blue Angels cockpit wearing a flight jacket for a $5 donation to the Museum Foundation.

•Outta Sight Flight No. 1. 11–11:30 a.m., Atrium.

Dorothy Kaufman and Linda Hartmann from the Northwest Florida Wildlife Sanctuary will discuss the mechanics of flying with live birds from the sanctuary, including a screech owl, a great horned owl, an American kestrel and an albino turkey vulture with an 8-foot wing span.

•Just Plane Fun. 11 a.m.–4 p.m., Atrium.

Ken Blackburn, Guinness World Record holder for time aloft for a paper airplane, will instruct kids at airplane-crafting stations on different ways to make a paper airplane.

Blackburn holds the Guinness Record for time aloft for a paper airplane at 27.6 seconds, and penned four paper airplane books, The World Record Paper Airplane Book, Kids’ Paper Airplane Book, Pocket Flyers and Aviation Legends Paper Airplane Book.

A book signing with Blackburn will be held from 2-4 p.m. in the Flight Deck Store.

•Outta Sight Flight No. 2. 12:30–1 p.m. Atrium.

Dorothy Kaufman and Linda Hartmann from the Northwest Florida Wildlife Sanctuary will repeat their earlier presentation.

•Just Plane Fun Competition. 1–2 p.m. Atrium.

The fun really gets soaring as kids compete in a friendly paper airplane competition, judged by Guinness World Record Holder, Ken Blackburn. Prizes will be awarded for first-place finishers.

•“The Magic of Flight,” and special drawing. 3 p.m. IMAX Theater.

Ticket-holders will be entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate from the Flight Deck Store.

Admission to the museum is free.
