ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — It was a happy Homecoming for the Robertsdale Golden Bears varsity football team, who improved to 1-3 with a 49-20 win over the Satsuma Gators Friday night at J.D. Sellars Stadium in Robertsdale.

Robertsdale QB Hunter Vaughn threw an interception and Satsuma's Richard Burton ran 47 yards on the Gators' first play from scrimmage with Austin Alexander adding the extra point to give Satsuma a 7-0 lead.

But the Bears would score the next 28 points and never looked back en route to a 49-20 victory.

"We were both 0-3 coming into the contest and we knew throwing an interception on the first play of the game was going to give them some momentum," said RHS Head Coach Scott Phelps. "But our guys were able to settle down and play their game, and from there it went the way we expected."

Vaughn did not throw another interception and was nearly perfect, going 13 of 15 for the remainder of the contest for 176 yards and five touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Nathaniel Kendrick came in for the Bears late in the contest and was perfect completing two passes for 20 yards.

Vaughn added 62 yards on six carries, while junior running back Sammie Tolbert carried the ball nine times for 89 yards and a score to lead the Bears rushing attack, which finished the game with 207 yards on 24 carries for a total of 380 yards on offense. Tolbert also caught two passes for 22 yards.

Alphonso Stewart caught two touchdown passes, a total of three catches for 36 yards and ran for another score, while Matthew Maddox (four catches, 56 yards total), Chase Hadley (three catches, 47 yards) and Jovaris Jackson (one catch, 15 yards) each caught a touchdown pass in the contest for the Bears.

After giving up 47 yards on the opening play of the game for the Gators, Robertsdale's defense allowed just 114 yards for the entire rest of the contest. The Gators finished the game with 133 yards rushing on 35 carries, led by Burton who had 88 yards on 12 carries and Wesley Moton who added 50 yards on eight carries. Satsuma QB Robert Willis completed just three passes in 12 attempts for 28 yards.

After giving up the opening score, Robertsdale scored twice in the opening period, then outscored the Gators 28-7 in the second quarter, including a score with just nine seconds left on the halftime clock to take a 42-13 lead at halftime.

Both teams added scores in the second half for a 49-20 Golden Bear victory.

Robertsdale goes on the road to West Mobile next week to take on the Baker Hornets, who are 3-1 after falling to Alma Bryant Friday night. The Golden Bears will then take on a pair of tough Regional opponents on the road at Fairhope and Daphne before returning home to take on the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets Oct. 14 at J.D. Sellars Stadium.

"(Baker) will be a good road test for us before we face three very tough Regional opponents," Phelps said. "We've been in every game so far. We just have to keep playing our game and keep getting better."
