DAPHNE, Ala. — Robertsdale picked up a 3-0 Class 6A Area 2 win at Daphne Thursday. The Golden Bears improved to 2-2 in Area 2 with their 25-13, 25-21, 25-20 sweep as Daphne dropped to 2-2 in the five-team league. Spanish Fort leads in the Area 2 standings at 3-0 as of Sept 25.

The Golden Bears were led by Beth Taylor with 13 kills, 14 digs, Myshelle Long with seven kills; Hali Thomas with 26 digs and Hope Plato with 27 assists.

The Trojans were led by Jordyn Valrie with nine kills, five blocks, four digs and an ace; Suzanne Evans with five kills, two blocks, five assists; Bri Turner had six blocks, four kills; Cierra Harris had four kills and four blocks; Kaydie Messer added four kills; Cameron Milroy led in set assists with 11 and Sandra Cross led the defense with 19 digs.

Robertsdale head coach Metta Roberts was pleased with the strong start of her club in game one but felt they take their foot off the gas too soon.

“I was proud to see us go out strong and establish a lead in game one, but we seemed to lose a little focus and Daphne is too good of a team to let up on,” she said. “I mean they’re good and took advantage of our—I don’t know what— our relaxing, especially in game three. We had a good solid lead and we almost handed it back. Got in certain rotations where we couldn’t put the ball on the floor. We need to learn to find and hit spots better. That and keeping our heads in the game.”

The 6A Area race continues for the Bears who travel to Gulf Shores Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. varsity start. RHS then visits Class 7A Foley for a rivalry match featuring a teacher-student coaching match up between Roberts and her former RHS standout player Anna Shartzer now heading the Lions’ program. That match is set to start at 5:30 p.m.

For their next Area 2 match Daphne travels to Baldwin County High Thursday for their second meeting of the year. The best-of-five varsity match starts after junior varsity play which begins at 4:30 p.m.
