DAPHNE, Ala. — This year’s “Fall into Reading Celebration” at the Daphne Public Library will be anything but quiet.
The festivities will feature musical acts including Linda Goodman — a singer, song writer and guitarist — during the event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Daphne Recreation Center.
She will perform songs from the 1970s through 1990s — some by Patsy Cline and Jody Mitchell, others by Sheryl Crow and Sara McLachlan — and some originals during the event, which will aid the library’s young-adult section.
The Foley and Gulf Shores native began singing and playing the guitar at 11 in church and performed professionally at 16 or 17.
“I was always intrigued with the guitar,” she said.
Some of Goodman’s idols include John Denver and Emmylou Harris, she said.
The singer — who’s worked with different bands throughout her career — on Saturday will bring guitarist Robbie Fleming and bassist Harold Floyd to the stage.
Newer musicians — Vince Carr, Rebekah Dennis and Mallory and Jordy Searcy — also will perform.
“These are excellent, local musicians,” she said.
Goodman earned a fine-arts degree from the University of South Alabama; she also studied art at Louisiana State University and has performed in Baton Rouge, La. and Nashville, Tenn., she said.
“I loved playing for the people in Louisiana,” she said. “They are really into music and art over there; they have a great appreciation for it.”
She met with a former president of a major record label while in Louisiana and asked him to watch her play in Nashville, she said.
He attended a performance at a resort, she said.
But just as her career was starting to take flight, Goodman decided to put her family — a husband and child — before her profession in music; she returned to Mobile.
However, Goodman and her husband divorced, shortly afterward, and she was inspired to try another hand at music, she said.
She and her husband, Terry, attend Daphne United Methodist Church and she performs at the church’s coffee house event with other aspiring artists every other month, she said.
Goodman enjoys other forms of art such as watercolor painting and graphic design.
Saturday’s event will be held at the Daphne Recreation Center at U.S. Highway 98 and Whispering Pines Road. For more, call 621-2818.
