Grafton Smith, 73, was called home Feb. 23, 2015 with family members by his side in Fairhope.

Grafton was born Feb. 15, 1942 in Fairfield to Twillie and Mary Smith.

Although he was born and raised in a small town, he had big dreams. He joined the armed forces at age 18, and was able to travel the world while enlisted in the Air Force and in the United States Army.

In 1961 he met his wife of 53 years, Margaret Brown. They were introduced by his baby brother, Herman Smith. Grafton, being a talker, convinced Margaret to take his hand in marriage after knowing her for only two weeks. They were married months later.

Through this union they had two girls who were the shining light of his heart. The firstborn was Sonia Artrice, and the youngest was Sharon Diane.

Grafton was an active member of Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a choir member, Sunday school teacher and held the position as church treasurer.

Over the years he devoted countless hours serving community members and his Little Rock family. He will always be remembered for his participation in the Mother’s Day Celebration Dinner and the “Chili” Cook Off.

His interests included being with family, gardening, hunting, fishing and cooking. Most people don’t know but he was a self proclaimed “chef.” He loved people and loved serving Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Smith; four sisters, Olivia Smith, Bennie Morrow, Regina Boglin and Linda Grayson; a sister-in-law, Martha Smith; a brother-in-law, Paul Morrow; two daughters, Sonia Smith and Sharon Smith Williams; a son-in-law, Gregory Williams; a granddaughter, Nichelle  Mianne; granddaughters by love, Noelle Genee and Mya Alexis; along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Known by many, and loved by all!

A visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015 at Little Rock Baptist Church, 17542 Little Rock Road in Foley.

The funeral service will follow at 11, with interment in Pine Rest Memorial Park.

Arrangements by Pine Rest Funeral Home, Foley.
