FOLEY, Ala. — A $450,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant will bring approximately 10,000 feet of sidewalk to the city.
That announcement was made Monday by Mayor John Koniar. Foley City Council members moved to accept the ARRA grant, then approved a Volkert & Associates task agreement that includes surveying and engineering in connection with sidewalk construction.
The proposed six-foot wide sidewalks would extend from 9th Avenue West to Orchid Avenue.
ARRA has to do with transportation infrastructure investments. The 2009 Act deals particularly with pedestrian infrastructure.
Councilman Wayne Trawick abstained on the Volkert task agreement.
In other council business on Monday, members moved to suspend the rules for immediate adoption of an ordinance implementing “Red Flag Requirements” for the prevention of identity theft. The action was approved and came about based on the recommendation of Ken Smith at the Alabama League of Municipalities and Foley City Attorney Casey Pipes.
A resolution was approved accepting a $500 donation from Tanger Outlet Mall for Foley Police Department uniforms and other equipment.
A resolution was approved accepting a 1977 step van from the Rosinton Volunteer Fire Department that could be used to transport a squad of officers.
Haley Lucido, program coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, made a presentation to Foley Fire Department for raising over $2,700 last year for MDA through FFD’s “Fill the Boot” campaign. In connection with that, the mayor read a proclamation declaring May 2009 as “Foley Firefighter Appreciation Month.”
With the recommendation of Foley Police Department, council members agreed to recommend approval of a Retail Beer (Off Premises) and Retail Table Wine licenses for Hayat and Sam LLC, under the trade name of S & A Food Mart, for their location at 609 N. McKenzie St.
Council members approved Pete Randa as the city’s representative on the Baldwin County Board of Equalization.
The council carried over the second reading of an ordinance amending the Zoning Ordinance regarding electronic signage.
