Carol Slaughter Griffin, 81, died peacefully March 24, 2007 in Lexington, S.C. Born April 16, 1925 to Asheton and Elizabeth Slaughter, she was a longtime resident of Fairhope.
She was a graduate of Fairhope High School and the University of Oklahoma School of Nursing and served in U.S. Army Nurse Cadet Corps. Upon graduation, she returned to Fairhope and became involved in the growth and development of Fairhope’s first community hospital, The Jordan Clinic.
Part of her career also included time spent serving in nursing management at Thomas Hospital. Later she was appointed to serve as a nurse for the Baldwin County Health Department.
She was one of the founding members of the early St. James Episcopal mission in Fairhope where the earliest services were held in a local home on Fels Avenue. Throughout her life she was an active member of St. James, serving the church in many capacities, among those being Vestry Person, Altar Guild, and member of the fund raising committee for the construction of the present church, chapel, and parish hall.
Her community involvement included Hospice Volunteer for families with children with terminal illnesses, Thomas Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer as well as several years of involvement on the City of Fairhope Welcoming Committee.
She was preceded in death by a son, Marvin Griffin, and son-in-law, Robert Heidbreder.
Survivors include a daughter Carol “Bobbee” Martin Heidbreder; three granddaughters, Amanda Heidbreder, Elizabeth (Rob) Heidbreder-Olson, and Katie (Andrew) Rockabrand; three great-granddaughters, Hannah and Madeleine Olson, Sydney Rockabrand, and one great-grandson Asheton Rockabrand; and sister, Elizabeth Sawyer.
A memorial service will be held in early summer at St. James Episcopal Church.
