‘Gross Out Camp’ registration deadline extended; event set for 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Organizers of Fresh Air Family's "Gross Out Camp" have extended the registration deadline until July 8 for the Spanish Fort location.

"We still have a few slots available," said Cynthia Howell, development director for the statewide nonprofit’s South Alabama chapter.

The weeklong camp, beginning July 18 at 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center, is designed for rising fourth- through sixth-graders and includes presenters from 5 Rivers, Weeks Bay Reserve, Dr. Bob the "Snake Man," a raptor expert from the Alabama 4-H Environmental Science Center and several local artists.

The cost is $150 per child, and it runs each day from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

"We all had a meeting with (founder) Verna (Gates) yesterday, and we are working to expand Fresh Air Family in South Alabama and have a positive impact on the community," Howell said.

Kimberly Wright-Knowles, one of two co-directors for the local event, said in an earlier interview that 5 Rivers offered the perfect location for the camp’s inaugural run in Baldwin County because it’s the "ultimate outdoor recreation area" along the Gulf Coast.

"Whether we are talking about estuaries and wetlands or the woodlands of Alabama, the kids will be able to experience the biodiversity of our state at this one location," she said.

Fresh Air Family Inc. is Alabama’s largest provider of outdoor education programs, offering more than 400 activities a year, 15 day camps for children and youth, two after-school programs and a home school program. The program is in its fifth year and is financed largely by donations from sponsors, corporations and individuals, allowing the statewide nonprofit to offer membership and most "adventures" at no or low cost.
