GULF SHORES, Ala. — It will be a day filled with music at the 2010 Mayor’s Prayer breakfast in Gulf Shores. Slated for Thursday, May 6 to coincide with the National Day of Prayer, the event, hosted by the Rotary Club of Pleasure Island, will begin at 7:15 with breakfast. The Erie Meier Activity Center will be the host site.
Unlike years past that included a keynote speaker, this year’s event will feature local musical talent. Music and songs will be inspirational, devotional and patriotic. The program will begin at 8 a.m. and will conclude by 9 a.m.
Tables for the event must be reserved for $150. Each table will seat 8 people, and all proceeds will be going to the Christian Service Center.
HISTORY
Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotels along with Senator Frank Carlson of Kansas helped initiate and pass a bill in 1952, allowing the President of the United States was to set aside an appropriate day each year, other than Sunday, as a National Day of Prayer.
The National Prayer Committee was officially formed in 1979 and in 1983 the first National Day of Prayer took place, organized by the NPC, in Washington D.C. with featured speakers Vice President George Bush and Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie.
On Thursday, May 8, 1988 President Ronald Reagan signed into law the designation of the first Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer.
This year will be the 59th anniversary of the observance of the National Day of Prayer.
CHRISTIAN SERVICE CENTER
The Christian Service Center is the organized expression of the Pleasure Island Ministerial Association's social welfare concerns for the people living in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The Center is funded by the Ministerial Association, The Churches of Pleasure Island, Community Organizations and concerned individuals.
Clients are given immediate help with their financial emergency. That help acts as a temporary help while the CSC tries to show clients the way to a more permanent solution to their problem. Counseling is provided for clients who have continual needs and make referrals to other agencies.
To participate in the prayer breakfast, participants should send contributions, made out to the Rotary Club Prayer Breakfast to Rotary Prayer Breakfast 2010, 6929 Driftwood Drive, Gulf Shores, AL 36542. Tables will be allocated on the basis of date of receipt of donations.
