GSES 2nd grade science matter experiments

Second graders in Mrs. Sara Altmyer’s class at Gulf Shores Elementary School have been busy experimenting to find out more about solids, liquids and gases.

Picture caption # 13 l to r: Chloe McMillan, Autumn Foote, Molly Sims and Clautasia Brown are experimenting by pouring ½ cup of green water into different size containers to show that even though the liquid changes its shape according to the container it is in, the amount of the water is still the same.

Picture # 14: Trent Dugger proves that air does indeed have mass and can be measured. He took two identical size balloons, blew them up to different sizes, weighed them on a balance scale and saw that the one blown up with the most air weighs more.

Picture #16: Autumn Foote proves that air takes up space by pushing a clear cup with a paper towel in the bottom of it to the bottom of a container of water. The air in the cup protected the paper towel from getting wet.
