GULF SHORES, Alabama — The Gulf Coast Select 7-on-7 tournament, a National Select 7-on-7 Tournament qualifier, will be Thursday and Friday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Baldwin high school football teams Baldwin County, Daphne, Fairhope, Gulf Shores and Spanish Fort will compete against teams from Mobile and Birmingham as well as Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana for a chance to compete in the National Select 7-on-7 Tournament hosted by Hoover July 26-28.
Mobile’s McGill-Toolen, Blount and St. Luke’s are part of the Gulf Coast 7-on-7 pool play field, along with Hoover, Pensacola Catholic and Niceville (Fla.) Desoto Central and Biloxi (Miss.) and Mandeville (La.).
Daphne took home last year’s National Select 7-on-7 Tournament championship. Foley, the Gulf Coast 7-on-7 host, finished as the runner-up in the Nick Saban 7-on-7tournament in Tuscaloosa earlier this month but will not play in the Gulf Coast qualifier.
Pool play in the Gulf Coast 7-on-7 begins Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Another round of pool play games will begin Friday at 8:30 a.m. The seeded tournament will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday with semifinals at 3:15 p.m. and the championship round set for 4 p.m.
7-on-7 games are played without offensive and defensive linemen and last 22 minutes each. Teams must cover 40 yards and can get first downs by crossing the 25 and 10-yard lines. Touchdowns are worth six points, with teams awarded one or two points for extra point plays from the two or five-yard lines. Teams can also score points by intercepting a pass or forcing a turnover on downs.
