Gulf of Mexico greater amberjack recreational fishing season resumes May 1

Posted

NOAA Fisheries has issued a reminder to recreational fishermen regarding the reopening of the Gulf of Mexico greater amberjack recreational fishing season. The season is set to resume at 12:01 a.m. local time on May 1, and will conclude at 12:01 a.m. local time on June 1.

The reopening of the recreational fishing season for greater amberjack holds significance within the context of established regulations and management measures. Presently, the designated recreational fishing seasons for greater amberjack span from August 1 to October 31 and from May 1 to May 31, as determined by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and enforced by NOAA Fisheries.

It's important to note that recreational greater amberjack fishing operates under an accountability measure, stipulating that the fishing season will undergo closure upon the attainment or projection of meeting the annual catch target. On June 29, 2023, NOAA Fisheries established a recreational greater amberjack fishing season spanning from August 1 through August 25, 2023, premised on projections indicating the imminent satisfaction of the annual catch target at that juncture.

However, preliminary data regarding landings suggest that the recreational greater amberjack annual catch target remains unmet and is not anticipated to be achieved. Consequently, the recreational fishing season is slated to recommence on May 1, offering enthusiasts another opportunity to engage in the pursuit of greater amberjack.

Nevertheless, it's imperative to bear in mind that the recreational fishing season for greater amberjack will once again undergo closure during its second seasonal cessation, beginning on June 1.

NOAA Fisheries' notification serves as a timely reminder to recreational fishermen of the regulatory framework governing the Gulf of Mexico greater amberjack recreational fishing season, ensuring adherence to established guidelines and conservation measures.
