GULF SHORES, Ala – Mayor Robert Craft and Gulf Shores City Council members have announced the appointment of Stephen K. Griffin, AICP, to the position of City Administrator for the City of Gulf Shores.

Griffin comes to Gulf Shores with 35 years of experience in community and economic development, planning, and parks and recreation management. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).

“Steve is solid in multiple areas of municipal operations, especially in planning for future growth and economic development,” said Craft. “From his previous employment with the city, he has a thorough understanding of tourism and the importance of balancing that with the needs of the permanent resident population.  He has a grasp of the unique culture of our family-oriented community and understands the need to enhance and protect our small town, big beach way of life.”

Throughout his career, Griffin has been an active member of the American Planning Association, American Institute of Certified Planners, Congress for the New Urbanism, International Council of Shopping Centers Mid-Atlantic Region Board, National Park and Recreation Association, Virginian Park and Recreation Society Board of Directors, Prince William County Park Authority, has been awarded the Prince William County Executive Award in 2008, and is a National Recreation and Parks Association and American Recreation and Parks Society Certified Leisure Professional.

The entire City Council participated in the decision of selecting Griffin to the City Administrator position, which drew more than 100 applicants. Griffin emerged from a pool of more than two dozen well-qualified finalists and was selected after more than five months of careful research, analysis and consideration.

“I am delighted to be able to serve the citizens and business community once again in Gulf Shores.  The Gulf Shores tourism-based economy, its quality of life, and its natural beauty combined with Gulf Shores being a great place to live and work is an exciting opportunity for my family and me,” said Griffin. “I also feel privileged to have a role in helping Gulf Shores maintain its character while also providing for its quality growth and evolution.”

Griffin will begin his duties as City Administrator on May 6, 2013.
