ROBERTSDALE – It may not have been pretty, but the Gulf Shores Dolphins beat Foley 9-6 in the opening game of the Hank Aaron Classic at Robertsdale High School on Monday.
Gulf Shores coach Donnie Spohn said his team probably made more mistakes than Foley did, but was pleased that his team got a win on opening day.
“It was pretty ugly, but it was a win,” he said. “Early in the year teams are going to make a lot of mistakes. We were just lucky to get a win.”
Kolby Spicer had four strikeouts and gave up four hits in four innings to get the win for Gulf Shores (1-0).
Collin Blankenship and Austin Carpenter both went 3-for-4 with RBIs for the Dolphins, and Hunter Harris had two RBIs.
“I thought we had some really good at-bats tonight, and some not-so-good ones,” Spohn said. “The guys who hit well know what they did right, and the ones who didn’t hit well know what they did wrong. It is stuff we are going to work on. I expect us to play better as a team.”
Leading 3-2 in the top of the fourth, the Dolphins got a run off a Daniel Pierce hit that drove in Bernard Nesbitt. Gulf Shores added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Braydon Bateman and Nesbitt hit back-to-back sacrifice flys to make the score 6-2. They added two more runs on a two RBI double by Harris in the top of the sixth. Carpenter then scored on a passed ball to make the score 9-4.
Foley had a chance in both the sixth and seventh innings to get back in the game. With the score 9-4 in favor of Gulf Shores in the bottom of the sixth, the Lions loaded the bases with three straight walks, and Spohn brought in pitcher Ryan Hadley to close out the inning. Hadley only allowed one run to cross. Hadley then gave up just one run in the seventh to close out the game.
“Hadley came in and pitched well for us there,” Spohn said. “He came in and threw strikes, and that is what we asked him to do. We played well defensively late in the game, too.”
Gulf Shores will play Baldwin County this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Robertsdale in the Hank Aaron Classic. The teams will be seeded and will play in a tournament at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile starting on Friday.
