Gulf Shores church offers tutoring for fourth- and fifth-graders

Posted

First Presbyterian Church of Gulf Shores is proud to sponsor an after school tutoring program for students from the Gulf Shores Elementary School in grades four and five.  Parents requesting extra help in reading and math can be referred to the program.

Co-chairing the program are Ms. Sandra Kant and Mrs. Barbara White.  Ms. Kant is a retired reading specialist. Mrs. White is enjoying retirement from the Baldwin County School System having taught fourth grade for 22 years in Elberta.  Under their leadership, tutors volunteer to serve one hour, twice a week, to the same student.  Some volunteers come only one day a week and share a student with another tutor.  A very close bond is shared between the students and these devoted volunteers.

Prior to beginning sessions, the tutors, leaders, and Rev. Steven Kurtz, Pastor at First Presbyterian, met with the Gulf Shores Elementary Principal, Mrs. Pierce, and the reading coach, Ms. Sarah Owen, to learn strategies most beneficial to the students.  The group learned some new methods to increase reading fluency and comprehension.  The students practice the multiplication tables, and work to understand how to read a math word problem and determine what strategy is required to solve the problem.

Upon arrival, students may partake of tasty, nutritious treats and drinks. While the student munches on the snacks, the tutors take time to find out about each student’s day, homework, skill practice, and current library book.

An exciting addition has been added to the program this year.  Transportation is available from the elementary school to the church via local community bus service.

The mission statement for this program is to enhance the mind, body, and spirit of each student.  A special award ceremony will be held at the end of this tutoring year to recognize each student for their attendance, perseverance, and discipline.

The program runs from mid- November through March.  Any one interested in this program may call 251-968-5019.  Tutors and students are welcome!
