She received a B.A. in organ from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. She has attended organ seminars in England, Scotland, Paris, Germany and Spain and has played organs in Westminster Abbey, Notre Dame Cathedral, Strasbourg Cathedral and the Royal Chapel at Versailles.
Helen VanAbbema Rodgers is the Director of Music Ministries at St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope. Highlights of her career have been to play organs in England, Scotland, France, East Germany and Spain, as well as conducting the St. James Choir as they toured in Italy, summer of 2006. This summer she returned to Paris where she was chosen to play in a master class with Olivier Latry, Titular Organist of Notre Dame Cathedral.
Irene Walker earned a BME in Music Education, with her major emphasis on organ, from Troy University. She received a scholarship to Sherwood Music Conservatory in Chicago where she studied Piano Performance with Dr. Herbert Renison. Irene retired from her private piano studio in Troy after many years of teaching. While in Troy, she also held the position of organist/pianist at Park Memorial Methodist Church.
Valerie Johnson sings with the GSUMC Praise Team. She has enjoyed returning to school this past year to continue her studies in theatre and voice at the University of West Florida. She performed with the South Baldwin Community Theatre in “The Sound of Music” and more recently the GSUMC Worship Arts’ production of “Annie.”
Cody Johnson is the Director of Worship Arts at GSUMC. Originally from St. Stephens, Ala, he served churches in the Mobile and Birmingham area prior to GSUMC. GSUMC's Reuter pipe organ was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It was completely restored and enhanced with a new three manual console and added digital stops. It was revoiced so that there is one cohesive sound making this a very complete instrument capable of playing all styles of literature.
