Gulf Shores City Clerk calls it quits

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Gulf Shores City Clerk Renee Moore has worked her last city council meeting and will soon be headed back to her roots in Austin, Texas.

Moore moved to Gulf Shores in 1988, and after working for Baldwin County Parks and Land Management and then spending some time in real estate, came to work for the City in 1991, becoming City Clerk in 1993.

Monday’s council meeting included smiles, tears, positive comments from the mayor and a proclamation from the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We have one last department head to hear from. Renee, this is your last chance to take a shot,” joked Mayor Robert Craft, reminding everyone of Moore’s retirement from the city.

Moore will serve her last official day on Thursday, and is happy about the time she spent in Gulf Shores.

“Number one I will miss the other employees of the City and the friends I have made here,” said Moore when asked what she would miss most about Gulf Shores. “I will miss dealing with the day to day problems that come up with both the residents and the tourists. It is always a challenge and every day is a new day.”

Moore, who is married with two children and four grandchildren says she looks forward to being grandma and going to little league games with her grandchildren in Texas, something she said she has not yet had an opportunity to do.

Moore plans to be back whenever possible to visit the many friends she has made, to see her daughter and grandchildren who live here, and yes, to work the Shrimp Festival, something she has enjoyed over the years.

“The Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce and Annual Shrimp Fest Committee would like to commend and extend a tremendous debt of gratitude to Renee Moore for your many years of service and participation,” said Chamber CEO Linda Mickelson Whitlock during her presentation, which was followed by a standing ovation from everyone in attendance.

During her tenure as City Clerk, Moore was twice voted City Clerk of the Year by the Alabama Association of Municipal Clerks and Administrators. She also served as the AAMCA’s District 8 director, president of the AAMCA, and as Region III director for the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

“I believe all of us that are in the business world or politics recognize that the success of any business or any community development project like the city council is directly related to the quality of the people who work there every day and dedicate their life to making it work,” said Mayor Craft. “Renee, you have done a tremendous job. I have had a year and a half to work with you, and you have been a tremendous help to me. I know that Mayor Duke and Mayor Bodenhamer would echo that. You have been an asset to the City and we wish you the best.”
