GULF SHORES, Ala - The Gulf Shores City Council met for its latest regular meeting on Monday night. The hour-long meeting began with the approval of a request from the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo for permission to use temporary building at its new property on County Road 6 West.

The building, which is part of the permanent site plan, would be used to shelter animals from the current zoo location in the event of tropical weather.

Council approved site plans for Waves Shopping Center located on West Beach Blvd. and the new Fire Station No. 1 that will be built near Jack Edwards Airport.

A lease for management and operation of Jack Edwards Airport by the Airport Authority of the City of Gulf Shores was authorized by passage of a resolution.

Another resolution designated City Clerk Renee Moore as the person responsible for preparing the list of qualified voters for the upcoming municipal election.

Law requires that mayors prepare the voting list but the appointment of Moore was necessary because Mayor Billy Duke is seeking re-election.

Council approved a resolution establishing fees, policies, and regulations for the use and reproduction of photographs and materials belonging to the Gulf Shores Museum.

Two resolutions were passed to award bids concerning the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Jerry Pate Turf and Irrigation was awarded a bid for the four year lease of two reel mowers at a rate of $18,623.85 per year.

Woerner Development was awarded $65,124 for sports field sodding at the Sportsplex.

Council voted to approve authorization of a change order concerning services by R and S Paving and Grading, Inc. at the Industrial Park as part of the Phase IV project.

The final item of the meeting also passed, it declared surplus property that will now be sold in an online auction and funds derived from the items will be placed in the city’s general fund.

Prior to adjourning, Duke announced that the city had received written approval from the Alabama Emergency Management Agency for a grant of $2,252,574. The money will be used to build a community shelter near Jack Edwards Airport and new Fire Station No. 1.

Duke said the city had received prior notification of the grant, but was excited to receive written confirmation. The projected cost of the shelter is $2.9 million.
