GULF SHORES, Alabama - The Gulf Shores Dolphins rebounded from three consecutive losses with a 27-14 homecoming win over the Baldwin County Tigers on Friday.
Nathan Harris completed 11-of-20 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing touchdown for Gulf Shores (2-3), who had not won since the season opener against Satsuma.
"I was proud of our kids because they kept fighting," Gulf Shores head coach Ben Blackmon said. "The mark of a true man is his character. Their character showed today. These kids could have tanked it, they could have thrown in the towel. But they kept fighting and came to practice every day with a good attitude. Kept getting better and it turned out great for them tonight."
Harris completed his first four passes and led Gulf Shores on a 73-yard drive for the Dolphins' first touchdown, a 1-yard rush from Cody Harbison. Baldwin County scored its first touchdown in the second quarter when quarterback Nate Jones hit Devonta Preston for a 42-yard scoring strike. Harris connected with Thrisstan Cornell for a 5-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Gulf Shores led 14-6 at the half.
Harris added a 9-yard touchdown run on the third play of the fourth quarter and Gulf Shores led 21-6. Jones threw his second touchdown pass to Preston with 7:18 left in the game, and JaQuan Finch took a direct snap and carried it into the end zone for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 21-14.
Chris Brown added a touchdown with four minutes to play to secure the win for Gulf Shores. Josh Frizzel and Brandon Stewart had sacks and Daniel Laborde had an interception for Gulf Shores in the win. Tyler Sellers blocked a BCHS field goal.
Andre Cox carried 26 times for 170 yards in the loss for BCHS, who fell to 0-5 overall. BCHS turned the ball over on downs twice, lost a fumble and an interception and could not convert after starting a drive at the Gulf Shores 18 in the third quarter.
"We had a great effort from our guys, we just didn't do a good job in the red zone," BCHS head coach Bobby Moore said. "We got down there two or three times and didn't get any points out of it. We had a lot of penalties that hurt us. You are not going to win very many football games when you do those kinds of things."
Gulf Shores hosts Vigor and Baldwin County hosts Foley next Friday.
