DAPHNE, Alabama — A ‘Phin-’Phriendly 'Phoul ball kicked back into fair territory to allow what would be the winning run as the Lady Dolphins picked up a 4-3 road win at Daphne Thursday.
Gulf Shores pitcher Jordan Reynolds helped keep the Lady Trojans off the board with a six-hitter and helped put the 'Phins' on it with a pair of solo homers.
Reynolds gave up a homer to Daphne slugger Peyton Grantham, however, who had three of her team’s hits including a triple and a double. Devan Bearden, Baylee Lucassen and McKenzie Thomas each had singles for Daphne.
Each team scored a run in the first inning and Gulf Shores led 2-1 after Reynolds’ second homer in the third. But Daphne tied it 2-1 in their half of the third on Grantham’s solo and went ahead 3-2 on an error after Grantham's triple in the fifth.
Emily Smith had a double and a single, Ashton Boone, Kelsey Boone,Savannah Sessions and Nicole Wallace singled for GSHS.
Daphne’s lead held until the seventh inning when Wallace reached with two outs. Reynolds drew a walk to put the tying run at second and Kelsey Boone drove in Wallace to make it 3-3. Smith kept the rally going with a single which put Reynolds at third. Ashton Boone then hit a roller up the outside of the first-base line in foul territory, but Boone kept running and reached first as the ball kicked in for an RBI single to score the go-ahead by Reynolds.
Daphne threatened to tie it again when Thomas’ single and a sacrifice by Kristin Fuller put the tying run in scoring position for the Trojans, but Fuller would be the last of nine runners stranded by the Daphne offense.
The Dolphins will play next in the 5A Area 2 tournament at Spanish Fort. Daphne will host Murphy today in their final regular-season game at 5 p.m.
